That is the freq you can record (the Nyquist point), rather than the freq at which you are recording.
The 16kHz means the 900 is sampling at 32kHz.
The 950 gives a range of 3kHz - 19.2kHz. If you're very careful about using this setting you can get a lot of 12bit crispness sounds from a small memory.
