These recordings were made over a five week period in March – April 2000, in the Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh districts.
All are in real-time except the recordings of Madras Brahmen and the Udaipur wedding celebrations, which were edited from much longer recordings. The sounds collected here are not ‘controlled’ or isolated from their context; street sounds, people working and talking, of traffic and the clatter of kitchenware, are heard alongside chant, music and prayer. This is a 3/4 length LP originally released is 2003, and is also available from the British Library National Sound Archive.
